About This Program

This 8-week intensive program equips aspiring and existing livestock farmers with practical skills in small ruminant production. Participants learn breed selection, feeding formulation, disease prevention protocols, and business strategies for profitable goat and sheep farming. The program includes field visits to successful livestock operations and direct mentorship from veterinary specialists.

Learning Objectives

Select and manage improved goat and sheep breeds
Formulate cost-effective feed from local ingredients
Implement a vaccination and health management calendar
Develop a breeding plan for herd expansion
Create a farm business plan and access market channels

Curriculum

Week 1–2

Breed Selection & Housing

Identifying improved local breeds (West African Dwarf, Boer crossbreeds), housing design, and biosecurity setup.

Week 3–4

Feeding & Nutrition

Feed formulation using local ingredients, pasture management, supplementary feeding plans, and water management.

Week 5–6

Health & Disease Management

Vaccination schedules (PPR, pneumonia), deworming protocols, common disease identification, and veterinary first aid.

Week 7

Breeding & Herd Management

Accelerated breeding programs, record keeping, kidding management, and genetic improvement strategies.

Week 8

Business & Market Access

Pricing strategies, connecting to butchers and institutional buyers, cooperative formation, and financial record keeping.
