    About This Program

    This 6-week program provides comprehensive training in freshwater aquaculture, focusing on African catfish and tilapia production. Participants learn pond construction, water quality management, feed formulation from local materials, and harvesting techniques. The program is designed for farmers looking to diversify income through integrated fish and crop farming systems.

    Learning Objectives

    • Design and construct a functional fish pond
    • Manage water quality for optimal fish health
    • Formulate cost-effective fish feeds locally
    • Implement disease prevention protocols
    • Harvest and market fish profitably

    Curriculum

    Week 1

    Introduction to Aquaculture

    Overview of freshwater fish species, market potential, and choosing the right system for your resources.

    Week 2

    Pond Design & Construction

    Site selection, earthen and concrete pond construction, water supply systems, and inlet/outlet design.

    Week 3

    Fingerling Management

    Sourcing quality fingerlings, acclimatization, stocking densities, and nursery management.

    Week 4

    Water Quality & Feed

    Monitoring pH, dissolved oxygen, and temperature. Formulating feeds from local ingredients.

    Week 5

    Disease Prevention

    Common fish diseases, biosecurity measures, water treatment, and mortality management.

    Week 6

    Harvesting & Sales

    Harvest timing, grading, live fish transport, processing options, and connecting to market buyers.
